Women Run the D 2023 Sustainability Report

The Women Run the D races were back this year at Belle isle near the James Scott Memorial Fountain. Over 700 runners showed up to do the 5K, 10K, or the signature half marathon. This event celebrates the strength of women and girls, and in particular those who have survived major health challenges. Two and three-generation runners are not uncommon, along with heart disease and cancer survivors. Happy Planet Running is proud to be a part of it!

The finish line was moved closer to the post-race area this year, which meant we didn’t have to set up a separate station at the finish line or police the trash cans at the fountain. Our single station plus a couple of All Waste boxes at the finish line did the job. Staffers Kaylee and Debbie kept everything under control, and the staff helped out by bringing their waste to the station..

Total waste was up slightly from last year, with a 50 percent increase in compostables offset by about a 33 percent decline in recyclables. Landfill was up slightly but still under 10 lbs. The largest contributor was tinfoil contaminated with cheese and peanut butter, with most other materials compostable or recyclable.

There were a couple of small issues, such as the truck collecting the aid station waste breaking down, so they bags came in rather late. But the staff helped with sorting, and by using compostable cups that went smoothly. Also many thanks to Epic for carrying our equipment there and back, as Jeff and the trailer were cleaning up at Run Woodstock. Another good year at Belle Isle!
