Boogie Down, Light ’em Up! Bonfyre Trail Fest 2023 Sustainability Report

This year’s RF Events Bonfyre Trail Fest was what a fall trail race should be all about – cool temps, beer afterward, and, of course, fires big enough to keep warm and roast marshmallows. A welcome change from last year, when high winds prevented us from even lighting the fires.

It was a great morning for a trail run, and with the station set up and nothing much to do for a while, I said what the heck and ran the 10-mile race while Charlie held down the fort. Didn’t do too badly for not training for it, and I got a “Grow a Pine Tree” box as an age group award, another nod from RF Events toward a more environmentally-friendly look. (No, it’s a little pot, not just a pinecone.)

Just getting a little run in before going to work!

The Zero Waste station was in its usual central location across from the band and beer tent. A second, unstaffed station was placed at the exit, which we periodically serviced. We also put out a “Free Stuff” box with discarded shirts, sweatshirts, and socks, which got a good bit of attention.

Everything went smoothly for us. The most time-consuming effort was removing the tabs from the 800 (more or less) beer cans, done at the request of someone collecting them for charity. And thanks to the Simply Spanish food truck serving with compostable materials, we had less than 2 lbs. of landfill.

We had quite a stack of cardboard boxes from the beanies, snack bags, and finisher mugs, but it all fit into the trailer. Many thanks to the RF crews at the registration table and finish line, who brought most of it to the station, instead of us hauling it over there!

Overall, another great result worth doing the boot scootin’ boogie about!
