The Legend Trail Run 2024 Sustainability Report

by Green Team captain Liz Li

It was a sunny day for this year’s RF Events The Legend trail run at Sleepy Hollow State Park. The weather was ideal for a run, with plenty of shade along the trail. Runners could choose from 5 miles, 10 miles, or a half marathon.

With Jeff busy hosting his daughter’s wedding, I was the Green Team! I received assistance from the RF staff to transport a large cart with equipment and a table.

I set up the main Zero Waste station near the finish line, with additional waste boxes placed near the trail entrance and the check-in desk. I periodically checked the two park trash cans near the finish line to capture any race-related waste.

Standard waste streams included compostables, water bottles, cardboard, and snack bags. We also handled specialty items like race bibs, small plastics (such as zip ties), and Gu wrappers, all of which were sent to TerraCycle. We had less than 30 lbs. of waste total, due in part to it being a cupless race! Everything was sorted, weighed, and packed up before 12:30 pm.
