This year’s Run Scream Run 5K/10K, put on by RF Events, actually took place on Halloween. As usual there were some terrific costumes on display.
Our Zero Waste stations (renamed for the occasion) were on either end of the building where cider and donuts are served. The finish line crew brought us their cardboard and plastic wrap, which was much appreciated.
Jeff was joined on the Green Team by Abby, Bridget, and regular volunteer Jules.

This year, in the spirit of Halloween, we added a couple items to those we accept.
No brains or bones were actually collected, but you never know.
Compostable items were food waste (donuts and banana peels), compostable cups, and napkins. Recycling included cardboard and boxboard, plastic water bottles, and plastic bags/wrap, along with the usual specialty items like small plastics, race bibs, and snack wrappers. The water stops used waxed cups, which will be recycled in East Lansing.
Total waste doubled from last year’s 61 lbs. to 122, nearly exactly the 2024 total. Compost was the largest increase, likely due to a lot more bananas being consumed. Recycling was up about 50 percent, and landfill nearly doubled, but was still under 3 lbs.
Everything went smoothly, and we were wrapped up before noon.
