A Long, Dirty Day: Dances with Dirt Hell Sustainability Report

A wet, dirty run through the wilderness. Not your idea of how to spend a fall Saturday? How about pizza, beer, and live music afterward? Plus you can wear exotic costumes and give your team a raunchy name. Welcome to Dances with Dirt, Hell edition!

This very popular event creates a lot of waste, most of which gets tossed during the exodus from the park just as it’s getting dark. Oh, and there are nine full-service aid stations, too. The Zero Waste team thus shares in the day’s suffering, and without the fancy costumes and raunchy team name. Did they still push through it without getting buried in leftover pizza? In the Deep End: Swim to the Moon 2019 Sustainability Report

The 10th annual Swim to the Moon was, for the athletes, and the charitable camp the race supported, a really good day. It went swimmingly, one might say.

A Day in Hell: Dances with Dirt 2018 Sustainability Report

This race has it all. Solo ultras, a 100K relay, beer and pizza at the end, … and a long day for the staff, including the Zero Waste team.

The past two years, the rush of people all leaving at once has overwhelmed the Zero Waste team with rapidly filled bags of beer cans and bottles, and towers of discarded pizza boxes. With redesigned waste stations and more signage, could we better handle the rush with only a couple of volunteers?

Another excellent Zero Waste result from an Epic Races event, with lower trash and an improved diversion result.

Ann Arbor Triathlon 2018 Sustainability Report

“Best race EVER!” Swim to the Moon Sustainability Report

“This is the best race EVER!” a woman excitedly told me at the Zero Waste station. “You guys thought of everything! And recycling, too!”

Realistically, the Zero Waste program at Swim to the Moon played only a small part of a very well-run event. Most of her thanks belongs to the first-rate staff of Epic Races and their volunteers. Still, I’d like to think seeing the recycling and composting bins was what drove her over the top.

So was her exuberant statement justified? Read on to find out!
